Discussion 2 – Food Additives: Friend or Foe? – Discussion Group 2

.

Discussion topic:

Food additives are in many foods we eat. They get into the foods either by direct (intentional) or indirect (incidental) routes. While consumers are likely to be aware of intentional food additives, associating them with enhanced color, flavor, and/or antioxidant properties, the potential for indirect food additives is often less clear.

1. Explain several possible benefits that food additives provide to consumers.

2. Explain several possible negative effects that food additives may have.

3. Do you think most consumers understand and/or are concerned about food additives? Should they? How can consumers make more informed choices about foods that contain food additives?

Your Responses:

· Make an ORIGINAL POST using the Guidelines below. Make sure to provide a reference to the sources of information you used.

Suggestions:

· Read Chapter 20 and watch the Video in the module – “Are food preservatives bad for you?” – BEFORE writing your post. Link here: https://ed.ted.com/lessons/are-preservatives-bad-for-you-eleanor-nelsen

· Do a little research on two different additives. Provide a brief review of each and discuss their benefits and potential negative effects (if any).

· Make sure to support your statements with a reliable reference .

· When choosing your sources of information (outside the textbook), make sure to evaluate their reliability. Use the method from Assignment 1 – apply the “W” questions.

· Make sure to provide a reference list at the end of your post. Format your post according to the Guidelines for Discussion Boards. If the textbook is one of your references, provide the page number in the reference list.

CITATIONS: In Discussions, we use the citation style widely accepted in scientific publications. Here are the basics.

· Number your sources in order of their appearance in your text.

· In-text citation: put the number next to a quotation or reference in your text. It should be in superscript or in parentheses.

· Arrange your reference list in numerical order . Indicate the title, the author(s) – if available, the source (or the organization supporting the website) AND the URL of the exact page where the information was found.

· — Assignments should be in Microsoft Word format. Be sure to save your assignments as MS Word documents and double-check the extension on the document before you submit it. The Microsoft Word document extensions are .doc and .docx.

· — All assignments must have a title and assignment number. All assignments must be typed and formatted. You should use 10-12 point Times New Roman or a similar font. Assignments should have a clear paragraph structure. No handwritten and scanned/photographed assignments will be accepted.
